WSP is currently initiating a search for a Transportation Design Lead Engineer for our Orange, CA office.
 
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate with experience in the design and task management of highway/roadway  projects for county transportation agencies and local city clients. This position will function as a Transportation Design Lead Engineer, and lead a project team in the development and delivery of the highway, roadway and other civil design work. The primary responsibilities include leading a team of engineers and support staff by providing technical leadership while performing various transportation and civil engineering tasks such as highway design, geometrics, plan and profile, super-elevation, signing, striping, ADA accessibility, staging, utility design, and coordination with other design disciplines for the overall highway/roadway design  for PSR, PA/ED and PS&E development, including special provisions, cost estimating, quality controls, and a variety of other tasks and duties. The role will also include collaboration within project and stakeholder teams.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform transportation design tasks for civil/highway projects requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard design or engineering techniques and procedures
  • Perform highway design tasks and prepare calculations on projects for geometrics, plan and profile, super-elevation, signing, striping, ADA accessibility, staging, contour grading, site work, and underground utilities from conceptual and preliminary engineering to final design
  • Responsible for coordination with other design disciplines, including drainage, structures, environmental, traffic, electrical, utilities and right of way
  • Responsible for adherence to scope, schedule and budget on projects
  • Responsible for preparation of project reports, plans, specifications, and estimate bid packages
  • Ensure that production of reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements
  • Interact with clients, and lead technical project design meetings
  • Supervise the use and training of MicroStation (Inroads, OpenRoads, and possibly AutoCAD or Civil3D) software to support various projects
  • Participate in pursuit management and the development of proposals

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited program
  • Seven (7) years of experience in the task/design management, technical design and preparation of Caltrans project reports and construction contract documents for highway design projects
  • California PE registration, or ability to receive within 6 months
  • Experience on projects with Caltrans and/or FHWA oversight
  • Knowledge of Caltrans Highway Design Manual and Project Development Procedures Manual
  • Experience related to highway and roadway infrastructure and transportation market, particularly focused on transportation engineering design
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, MicroStation V8i and Inroads (AutoCAD experience is a plus but not required)
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to mentor staff and supervise the production of project deliverables
  • Knowledge of the Southern California market
  • Knowledge and understanding of AASHTO Highway Design Guide, California MUTCD, Greenbook / APWA standards, and other related standards.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
