This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time Environmental Scientist for our Horseheads, New York office. Be involved in projects with our Earth and Environmental Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Provides technical assistance and guidance for the collection, identification, and compiling of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of biological, physical, and earth sciences. Provides support and guidance for environmental work and permitting projects. Tasks may include assisting with the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, air emission, pollution control, cultural impact, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to environmental systems and species caused by human activity.  Generates accurate and concise documentation, assessing and advising on project areas, and applying and integrating the science of the interactions between the physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment to solve environmental challenges.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Providing technical support on projects involving spill response, environmental assessment, remediation, and waste management services to Oil & Gas, industrial and solid waste clients within the region.
  • Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Providing on-call services for environmental emergency responses.
    • Performing inspection and oversight of remedial, solid waste and construction projects.
    • Interfacing with clients and subcontractors.
    • Sampling ground/surface water, soil, air, and wastes.
    • Supporting subsurface investigation processes including: drilling, soil classification, and well installation.
    • Completing field documentation, data interpretation, and assisting with report preparation.
    • Maintaining and managing environmental test equipment.
    • Preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to oneself and other Golder staff, client’s personnel and the public.
    • Reporting all health and safety concerns, incidents and near miss events and participating in all office-lead health and safety initiatives.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Geology, Hydrogeology or a related life sciences field.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working as an environmental scientist and completing environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat and impact assessments, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Must have ability to travel up to 75% of the time for out-of-town project opportunities, including periods of more than one week.
  • Must have the ability to work overtime and during weekends on short notice.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all seasonal weather conditions.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work with highly motivated project team.
  • Strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Candidate must be willing to operate and maintain field testing and monitoring equipment, and able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Preparation of geologic boring logs, cross-sections, groundwater contour maps and iso-concentration maps.
  • Operation, maintenance and monitoring of remedial systems.
  • Phase I environmental site assessments and Phase II contaminated site investigations.
  • Specialized computer skills including database applications, groundwater and contaminant modeling software, AutoCAD, GIS, and/or gINT.

* Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
