WSP is currently initiating a search for Lead Structural / Bridge Engineer for our Herndon, VA office. In this hybrid work environment, you will have the opportunity to lead bridge design efforts on projects and be a key contributor on exciting major bridge and transportation projects in the Virginia region. The ideal candidate will have broad-based experience with bridge design. Your Impact
- Performing structural analysis and design for various bridge project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, and construction.
- Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates and construction safety and phasing plans for bridge and other design-build projects.
- Incorporate advanced technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies for the safety and functionality of end-users and transportation vehicles/systems, and implementing future-ready solutions with structural design standards.
- Coordinate, review and approve design plans and calculations ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations for structural or construction issues.
- Analyze and interpret data obtained during site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation activities.
- Oversee and monitor bridge projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis.
- Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
- Proactively collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
- Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 7 years minimum of relevant post-education experience in structural engineering including bridge design.
- Professional Engineer license.
- Strong technical skills relevant to bridge/structural design and analysis.
- Proficient with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Highly proficient with technical writing and structural analysis software including (MicroStation, LARSA, MIDAS, LEAD Bridge, STAAD Pro, AASHTOWare BrR)
- Well-defined knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections on the construction and design of bridges or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies.
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree.
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
- Knowledge of VDOT Specifications, Standards, and Design Manual
