JUNIOR TRAFFIC ENGINEER - 17078

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Junior Traffic Engineer for our Newark, New Jersey, office.  Be involved in projects with our Traffic Engineering Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

The qualified candidate provides support to technical staff and project managers for the analysis, improvement, planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation. Tasks may include basic assistance with performing capacity analyses and assisting with the design, concept development, and construction of highways, work zone traffic patterns, and traffic signal design and timing. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.  Specific responsibilities will include:

Your Impact

  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, plan documentation, maps, technical data, and official websites and publications, for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic professional traffic engineering work relating to conducting investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with engineering standards.  Field work may occasionally be required.
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety devices.
  • Assist with conducting traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type (cars, trucks, bike riders, pedestrians) of traffic on the roadway.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using Microsoft office applications like Word and Excel.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with the design to help make the travel network safer and more efficient.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in traffic engineering design, ITS design, or civil engineering design & construction projects.
  • Demonstrated track record of working with transportation clients.
  • Proficient in the MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • In-depth knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, processes, traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, task management.
  • Familiarity with intersection geometric design, guiderail and safety appurtenances.
  • Ability to perform traffic simulation modeling and analysis using software tools such as SYNCHRO, VISSIM, and HCS.
  • Experience preparing contract drawings with Bentley MicroStation, and using AutoTURN, GuideSIGN.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Ability to express ideas concisely and confidently.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Experience and/or ability to perform field work, including site inventories and traffic data collection.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • EIT certification is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to earn the license within one or two years.
  • Good working knowledge of the New Jersey highway and street network.
  • Strong interest in transportation planning, traffic engineering and the built environment.
  • ITS design experience.
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
  • Familiar with the MUTCD, HCM, HSM, AASHTO, ITE guidelines, and NJDOT design standards.
  • Experience developing construction bid packages, including plans, construction cost estimates, and technical specifications.
  • Experience with site trip generation, operational analysis of intersections and roadways, crash and safety analyses, signal design, and/or signing, pavement marking and delineation layout and design.
  • Experience in Highway Lighting Design.
