WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Roadway Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. Be involved in projects with our Mid-Atlantic District Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The successful candidate should have experience in leading civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. This position will function as the lead engineer on projects for VDOT and other state agencies; central Virginia counties and cities; and other local agency / municipal clients. Your Impact
- Assist in leading and continue developing the Richmond Civil/Roadway design team.
- Provide guidance and mentoring of staff and direct work assignments.
- Maintain positive client relationships to expand current business.
- Collaborate with management to determine long-range plans and objectives, including recommendations on project staffing.
- Actively seek out and lead new opportunities by leveraging established local relationships and participate in pursuit proposals.
- Manage projects and maintain quality, schedule, budget and profitability of assigned projects, overseeing preparation of plans, specifications, and proposals.
- Lead project tasks for conceptual and preliminary engineering and final design activities, as well as development of construction plans, calculations and specifications.
- Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities, etc.
- Participate hands-on in the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E)
- Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates standards and guidelines, correspondence, and/or prepare reports
- Participate in preparation of technical proposals and labor estimates.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and productive work relationships with employees, clients and other stakeholders.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 10+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering and civil design.
- Virginia Professional Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
- Understanding and familiarity with AASHTO and VDOT Design Guidelines and Standards
- Proficiency in MicroStation and Geopak SS4/OpenRoads/OpenRoads Designer roadway design software; familiarity with VDOT CADD/design software setup and standards; familiarity with AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil3D.
- Highly proficient with civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
- Experience with infrastructure design, including a variety of rehabilitation and reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Highly proficient with developing technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, review agencies, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Proficient with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets and other design tools.
- Experienced with providing critical review for documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Flexible to meet a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- Able to work in a hybrid office environment, with three days in the office and the remaining days remote (no upper limit on in-office days, so able to work more than three days in the office if desired).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Alternative Delivery projects (design-build, P3, CM/GC) is highly desirable
- Experience with Henrico, Chesterfield and other local counties and/or City of Richmond standards and projects.
- Familiarity with MS Project, Primavera or similar scheduling software.
- Affiliation and/or leadership positions with professional societies.
