This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Assistant Vice President, Coastal Restoration Specialist for our Tallahassee, FL –John Knox Road office. The following other location will also be considered: Pensacola. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Our successful candidate will be an experienced professional with a background in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline and a strong selling mindset with the ability to collaborate with a variety of clients, including regulatory personnel, to articulate our service offerings and identify and lead business opportunities. The successful candidate will also have an innovative, creative, and open-minded attitude regarding coastal management and protection methods and strong local, state, and federal permitting experience. Duties may include coastal habitat restoration/monitoring, resiliency planning/policy, stakeholder engagement/facilitation, grant proposals/management, management of project teams/budgets/schedules, and public speaking/presentations.

Your Impact

  • Work with WSP Project Directors, Project Managers, and other technical staff to support a variety of environmental projects, including coastal habitat restoration and monitoring projects, resiliency planning projects, permitting for coastal infrastructure, grant management, and other projects, as needed.
  • Oversee and monitor (i.e., serve as a Project Manager) cross-functional teams in executing project work, permitting strategies, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance, including tracking project budgets, labor hours and expenses, and subcontractor costs.
  • Coordinate/oversee collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental monitoring/survey data including habitat characterization/mapping, water quality parameters, shoreline change, and coastal land use.
  • Analyze coastal conditions and assist with planning/design/permitting of various coastal and marine habitat restoration projects, with a focus on coastal protection/resiliency.
  • Prepare data summaries and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
  • Prepare comprehensive memorandums, technical reports, and presentations that explain research, methodologies, findings, and recommendations for coastal restoration or similar projects.
  • Actively engage in business development, profitable opportunity identification, and proposal writing including the scoping and costing of medium- to large-sized projects, development of presentations, and professional networking.
  • Assist in developing and implementing creative solutions for coastal restoration/resiliency projects/programs.
  • Tactfully coordinate with diverse interests to generate consensus on coastal issues.
  • Utilize sound science and innovative ideas to pioneer best practices in coastal restoration/resiliency.
  • Remain current in latest environmental science subject matter and techniques.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
  • Coordinate with clients, resource/regulatory agencies, and technical staff in a confident and professional manner.
  • Coordinate, attend, and lead client and/or environmental regulatory meetings.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and support various other projects, as needed, to achieve client goals, address company needs, and achieve company success.
  • Self-manage assigned workload.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 10+ of relevant post-education experience working in coastal habitat restoration and monitoring, resiliency planning, coastal permitting, and/or grant management.
  • Experience with underwater data collection, coastal species identification, and statistical analyses.
  • Understanding of the wave attenuation capacity of reefs, marshes, and mangrove habitats.
  • Ability to collect and process bathymetric data and wave data, including use of innovative, low-cost techniques.
  • Ability to perform (or coordinate said analyses) riverine/coastal and hydraulic analyses using numerical modeling software, for hydrodynamics, waves, and sediment transport;
  • Experience using ArcGIS.
  • Extensive experience with local, state, and federal permitting agencies, and environmental protection regulations, guidelines, and consulting processes pertaining to the specific position.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and contributing to technical reports, environmental permit applications, field surveys and reporting, and resource and impact evaluations.
  • Project management experience and familiarity with tracking hours and expenses for project work and adhering to project schedules.
  • Ability to keep multiple tasks organized and moving forward and work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel), technology and tools.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results and data collection and identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work in remote coastal areas that are accessible only by boat and adhere to schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Good swimming skills and the ability to pass a snorkeling skills test.
  • Ability to drive a full-size pickup or van with attached trailer.
  • Valid driver’s license and clear driving record with ability to travel to meetings and project site(s).
  • Ability to walk for several miles and work in extreme temperatures associated with the southeastern US.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10-20% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Science, Coastal Engineering, or related discipline is preferred.
  • SCUBA diving certification, experience operating a boat, and FAA Part 107 Unmanned Pilot Certification are all considered plusses.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER)
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
