This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Bridge Safety Inspection Structural Engineer to support our robust and growing Bridge Inspection Practice in the Southeast Region! This position will ideally be located in the state of Florida or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Provides technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, improvement of bridges in federal, state, or local jurisdictions. Tasks may include assisting with the research, inspection, and evaluation of transportation structures, including (but not limited) to bridges, culverts, pedestrian bridges, signature bridges, and traffic control devices (ancillary structures). Generates accurate and concise reports based on field inspections and testing. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Specialized structural training for analysis and testing of different types of structural will be provided.

Your Impact

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical inspections of structures, testing data and information models, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for the evaluation of structures.
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and assist with conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine the structural integrity of assets.
  • Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with structural engineering design standards.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work.
  • Verify the characteristics of a structure (or parts of), providing technical assistance on securing structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local and privately funded improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification (EIT).
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis, and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Ability to work on challenging environments, including heights, confined spaces, and areas close to active traffic.
  • Regular travel may be required in the US Southeast and Puerto Rico.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Ability of obtaining a Professional Engineer License within two (2) years.
  • 10-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
