This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Civil/Structural Substation Engineer for our Boston, Massachusetts office.  The following location will also be considered: Newark, New Jersey.  Be involved in projects with our Energy Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

This role will provide delivery of high voltage electrical substation designs for our projects.  The Civil/Structural Substation Engineer will work under the leadership of Supervising Engineer. The Candidate is required to work within a multi-discipline team to design efficient and reliable high voltage substations. The engineer will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The engineer will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals.

Your Impact

  • Work under mentorship and guidance of the Supervising Engineer. 
  • Preparation of project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
  • Design of electrical substation facilities including site and equipment layouts, shallow and deep foundations, structural steel supports for equipment, transmission line termination structures, drainage and grading design, roadway design, cable ducts and trenches, cable trays and supports, fence and access gates, lighting and lighting poles and foundations.
  • Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
  • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
  • Resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
  • Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support projects.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule and cost of projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution. 
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience in substation structures and foundations design.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of substation codes and standards such as ASCE 113, ASCE 74, ASCE 7, OSHA, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Knowledge of building and design codes IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI-318.
  • Proficiency with Structural analysis software – STAAD.Pro, STAAD Foundations, RISA, RISA Foundations or similar software package.
  • Proficiency with Structural steel design – frames, columns, beams, base plates per AISC.
  • Proficiency with steel connection design software – RAM Connections, Tekla, Idea Statica.
  • Proficiency with Hilti Profis, Dewalt Design Assist or other anchor bolt design software.
  • Proficiency with concrete foundation design – slab on grade, shallow foundations, precast concrete foundations, retaining walls, fence foundations.
  • Proficiency with a MS Office, MathCAD, PDF authoring software – Bluebeam or similar.
  • Efficient communications and ability to work with team members not located in the same office through MS Teams, email, or telephone calls.
  • The selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States, or be able to obtain work authorized status in the United States prior to the start of employment. This role is eligible for employment visa sponsorship for eligible and qualified candidates.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering. 
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification or or Eligible for P.E. licensing.
  • Working knowledge of Revit or AutoCAD Civil 3D software
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD software
