The WSP Herndon civil group serves clients throughout the Metropolitan Washington and Northern Virgina region and beyond on a wide variety of projects ranging from new or reconstructed roadways, intersection improvements, design-build projects and more. This position is an excellent opportunity to learn civil engineering and transportation design and production skills and build relationships within WSP as well as with clients throughout the region.

Your Impact

  • Support a variety of engineering tasks on projects for local, state and federal clients, including roadway, bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
  • Assist in design using various types of CADD design software.
  • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification (or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire date).
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience in transportation projects.
  • Experience with basic computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams.
  • Self-motivated with strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others and expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional local travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of MicroStation/InRoads/Geopak/OpenRoads.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD/Civil 3D.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO Green Book.
  • Familiarity with VDOT or Northern Virginia locality design requirements.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
