We are currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Fire Protection Engineer for our New York, NY office. The following locations will also be considered: Milwaukee, WI and Troy, NY.  

Your Impact

  • Develop construction plans for automatic fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump systems, fire detection, and alarm systems
  • Review voice evacuation systems, and egress systems
  • Perform hydraulic and air-sampling smoke detection calculations to ensure design feasibility
  • Produce project specifications for CSI Divisions 21 for Fire Suppression & 28 sections related to Fire Detection and Alarm
  • Review fire and safety drawings for compliance to ensure meeting safety code requirements
  • Assist with design tasks for technical assignments on projects
  • Review shop drawings, product data, and calculations against contract documents and codes
  • Provide design team and client with insight on life safety considerations
  • Attend client meeting and observe discussions
  • Assist with preparation of technical deliverables
  • Keep up-to-date on technical knowledge of current and emerging practices
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.  
  • Familiarity with relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent graduate in an accredited Engineering, or related, Undergraduate or Graduate program.
  • The successful candidate will have 0-3 years of internship experience in Fire & Life Safety Engineering.
  • Experience using BIM Modeling Software (Revit) and hydraulic calculation software. 
  • Engineer in Training Certification.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $53,200 - $93,000
