This Opportunity

WSP is currently recruiting an Early Career Geotechnical Engineer for geotechnical engineering work to be based in our Asheville, NC office. This individual will be part of our Ground Engineering & Materials team that supports Energy, Industrial, Commercial, and Transportation Sector clients locally and across the southeast. This position will at times require significant time in the field, away from the office. Field responsibilities may include observation of subsurface investigations such as logging boreholes and other typical in-situ testing techniques, or observation of various geotechnical construction activities such as: general grading, installation of shallow and deep foundations, instrumentation installation and monitoring, soil-retaining structures, and soil-improvement. The position will include inspection, observation, and testing of construction materials (soil, rock, and concrete) in the field and laboratory.  The candidate should feel comfortable interacting with clients, construction personnel, and sub-contractors as a professional representative of WSP.

Your Impact

  • Perform engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of senior engineering professionals.
  • Develop field data in support of geotechnical investigations and design as directed.
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing technical assistance on various design and construction issues involving rock and soil mechanics, and investigating subsurface and geological conditions to design and build foundations, earth structures, and pavement sub-grades.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with design concepts, construction, mitigation and improvement activities, and remediation projects.
  • Work with cross-functional, multi-discipline teams in executing project work.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field/site work and laboratory testing.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities, and development projects. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with an emphasis on quality work products.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification. 
  • Prior geotechnical or construction materials testing work experience. 
  • Experience using geotechnical design software (i.e., GINT, LPILE, Settle 3D, GeoSlope, Group, etc.).
