This Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking an Early Career GIS Analyst for our Brentwood, TN office. The following offices will also be considered: Knoxville, TN and Birmingham, AL. Takes part in providing local technical assistance for capturing, modeling, and analyzing geographical and tabular data to illustrate and determine spatial relationships as it pertains to client projects.  Assignments may include supporting technical staff with spatial mapping, discovering patterns and trends, and developing mapping applications and tools at the intersection of data analysis, programming, and cartography.  Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Perform GIS database development, qualitative/quantitative analysis, and mapping as a member of water resources (including floodplain mapping) and environmental services project teams.
  • Manage individual project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization.
  • Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications.
  • Assist with performing GIS surveys and reports from field sites for project research and investigation.  
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, compiling documentation, and analysis of incoming and existent data.
  • Model and prepare topographic maps, graphs, and tabular data using GPS, aerial photographs, and other tools and data to determine exact locations of project areas, site impact, and associated physical and geographic sensitivities.
  • Perform basic professional GIS work relating to conducting investigations, inspections, studies, and surveys to gain further information relating to digital mapping, merging topographical data with external data, identifying the characteristics and conditions of a site, and determining the authenticity of spatial data. 
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software.
  • Assist with researching and illustrating the geography of project sites, as well as assisting with public exhibits relating to projects.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers by offering input and analysis with low-level threat mitigation activities, master planning, and permitting activities.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, CADD, and other technicians in executing project work.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
    Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, or a related field.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience in discipline with prior GIS experience. 
  • Experience with ESRI’s Arc GIS platform. 
  • Experience with GIS field equipment, plotting coordinates, and data collection.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, web mapping applications and tools.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with an emphasis on quality work products.
  • The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent graduate in an accredited GIS, Environmental Science, Planning, or related, Undergraduate or Graduate program.
  • Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Python, Visual Basic, Arcade, or SQL programming.
