This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an experienced Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to join our Gainesville, FL office.  Be involved in projects with the Florida Ecology group in our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.  In this role you will be responsible for a variety of ecological evaluations in support of environmental and engineering consulting projects.

Your Impact

  • Jurisdictional wetland delineation 
  • Threatened and endangered species surveys, specifically gopher tortoise
  • Assessment of potential impacts to wetlands and/or protected species
  • Preparation of FDEP Environmental Resource and US Army Corps of Engineers dredge/fill permits
  • Proposal preparation, project management, regulatory agency coordination
  • Wetland mitigation monitoring
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Wildlife Ecology, Wetland Ecology, Botany or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with Florida wetland ecology, wildlife ecology, and/or botany
  • Fluency in regulatory agency guidelines in the state of Florida (FDEP, FWC, USACE, USFWS)
  • Capable of producing clear and concise written documents
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Comfortable with managing a workflow that includes field work and completion of reporting tasks for multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Capable of working independently and effectively with a team
  • Self-motivated, reliable and dedicated individual
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective manner to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening. 
  • Local and/or national travel with possible short-term or long-term assignments at project sites

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FWC Gopher Tortoise Agent preferred
  • Advanced degree (MS, PhD) can be substituted for 2 years' experience.
