This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Environmental Geologist for the Jacksonville, FL – Baymeadows Road office.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.  The Geologist provides technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, and environmental permitting projects. Tasks may include assisting with the delineation and monitoring of known areas of soil and/or groundwater contamination, performing calculations to contaminated waste disposal, pollution control, and preserving the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of air, water, and land resources. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding field conditions and assessing and advising on the short- and long-term risks to ecological and human health.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Identify, collect, and compile environmental data from samples of soil, soil gas, groundwater, air, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • Perform environmental geology work and assist with conducting investigations, inspections, and environmental studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular environmental problem or issue, verify site characteristics, and/or to plan for future environmental needs.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to prevent, control, restore, clean-up, or address environmental issues or problems.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of environmental data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level threat mitigation activities.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on various environmental issues.
  • Research environmental databases regarding historical property land uses.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in environmental geology.
  • Knowledge of environmental geology principles, practices, and methods and their application to environmental and project work-related issues.
  • Knowledge with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products., and mitigation programs.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used in identifying, measuring, sampling, and studying environmental control.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, math principles, predictive models, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or closely related discipline.
  • Florida Geologist-in-Training, or ability to obtain one within first year of employment.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER)
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training
  • Familiarity with the Florida Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program.
