This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a Construction Quality Assurance Engineer to join our mining services team in Florida. The candidate will be assigned to provide on-site oversight of a multi-year project to close a phosphogypsum stack in White Springs, Florida.  

Your Impact

  • The primary responsibilities for this position will be to provide construction oversight and quality assurance services on a project to close a phosphogypsum stack in White Springs, Florida, including coordination with the client, contractor, and Engineer of Record. 
  • This is a full-time construction project assignment and will require flexibility to adhere to the contractor’s schedule and adjust to changes, including 50-hour weeks and weekend work when necessary.  
  • The Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Engineer will:
    o    Implement CQA program by supervising CQA testing activities, and manage the testing lab, lab staff and field staff for the duration of the project.
    o    Follow standard practices to provide technical assistance and guidance that accounts for the proper inspection, construction, and functioning of earthworks and concrete structures, materials, and/or mechanical systems according to design standard specifications.
    o    Act as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for projects of a moderate scope            and complexity.
    o    Monitor project phasing plans and contractors' work to ensure quality control and contract compliance; documenting work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
    o    Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
    o    Attend pre-construction meetings, progress meetings and any resolution meetings and answer questions from contractors and other attendees.
    o    Write technical reports summarizing inspection findings and conclusions; generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, flow diagrams, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports.
    o    Field management of CQA programs and field staff for mining and large-scale earthworks projects
    o    Assist technical staff, project managers, and contractors with risk identification and assessment, offering input, analysis, escalation, or resolution with construction, mitigation, and improvement activities for more intricate and involved construction or engineering problems.
    o    Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of any field/site work, reviewing staffing, and equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
    o    Provide guidance and training to entry-level inspection staff.
    o    Engage in contact with client and contractor personnel to schedule and coordinate project inspection.
    o    Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
    o    Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are


Required Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering, Construction Management, or extensive field experience in the closure of phosphogypsum stacks
  • 7+ years of experience in heavy earthmoving civil construction projects, preferably with experience in the closure of phosphogypsum stacks
  • Strong working knowledge of earthwork and general civil construction activities, including geomembrane installation.  Strong academic background and solid understanding of soil mechanics and local Florida soils and geology
  • Experience with drilling, field investigations, and laboratory testing
  • Good communication, report writing, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Superior time management, planning and ability to interact with clients
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Must pass background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy
  • This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

    o    Earth dams and levees
    o    Mining, (tailings management and dam design, hydraulic structures, etc.)
    o    Site closure and Construction QAQC
    o    Stormwater/Process Water Management
