This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a National Bridges and Structures Practice Director to provide strategic direction and overall leadership to a highly skilled national team providing seasoned technical expertise, innovative solutions, and high quality for our clients. The person selected for this position is expected to build and foster strong client and stakeholder relationships with an overall focus on sustaining the WSP legacy technical bench of bridge engineering, and expanding our overall US bridge market in these unprecedented times of transportation opportunity.
 
The National Bridges and Structures Practice Director will possess a balanced commercial, strategic and business development mindset and the ability to drive an integrated strategy that combines advisory, planning, design engineering, program management and construction management professional services.  We seek to be an industry leader and trusted advisor- driving business growth with a commitment to client and commercial success.  These will be important objectives for this position.
 
The National Bridges and Structures Practice Director will also engage with our technical experts to develop the full suite of relevant client services. The Chief Structures Engineer, multiple Practice Leads and Bridge Managers report directly to the National Bridges and Structures Practice Director. They will also lead the Structures Council, including the abovementioned direct reports and all District Structural Leads to focus on shared visions of quality, business development, work sharing, and combined success. 
 
A key part of this role is for the National Bridges and Structures Practice Director to collaborate with the firm’s regional and local leadership to implement client engagement and business development strategies that are focused on growing our presence and ability to deliver strategic and technical solutions for our clients.

The position can sit out of any mutually agreed WSP USA office.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management for of over 50 National Bridges and Structures Practice complex bridge staff in the National Highway/Bridge business line.
  • Provide overall collaboration leadership to the Structures discipline consisting of over 600 bridge professionals in the WSP geographic Regions in the US.
  • Provide technical support and assist PMs and Structural regional and district leads nationally in projects/contracts related to complex bridge projects, both in pursuits and project delivery.
  • Develop strategic direction and focus for Complex Bridge Support for the marketing and pursuit efforts in the US and Internationally on both conventional delivery services and alternative project delivery methods such as Design/Build; CM/GC; Public, Private Partnerships and Comprehensive Delivery Agreements.
  • Provide National and International marketing and business development activities in coordination with our Global structures practice.
  • Coordinate technical quality reviews of complex bridge projects with the Chief Structures Engineer.
  • Attend conferences related to the Bridge Industry, selectively delegating attendance to direct reports and others when appropriate. Promote WSP in interacting with clients and DOTs.
  • Be active in professional associations to enhance the standing of the organization and contribute to continued client interface.
  • Provide assistance in understanding of current and emerging technical trends in complex bridges that affect WSP USA’s business.
  • Oversee structural computer software availability in coordination with computer applications engineers. 
  • Perform other relevant duties as required

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 17+ years of bridge industry engineering design experience
  • The position requires BA/BS degree in Engineering, proven track record of successfully leading and growing programs, teams and/or initiatives in the bridge practice
  • Professional engineering registration required
  • Ability to work in this country immediately required
  • Demonstrated success with challenging project schedules and technical issues
  • Demonstrated verbal/oral skills
  • Strong technical writing ability
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in the design, construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of all bridge and structures types
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with clients (including contractors) in the US and other countries
  • Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the bridge industry, especially regarding the science and engineering of complex bridge design and construction methods

Compensation

 Expected Salary (all locations): $166,700 - $350,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $187,000-330,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
