WSP is currently initiating a search for a National Transportation Strategic Advisor to provide strategic direction and leadership in identification, development and delivery of multi-modal and tolling projects, building and fostering strong client and stakeholder relationships with an overall focus on growth and expanding our market leadership.  The candidate must have established relationships with State Departments of Transportation, tolling agencies, regional and local transportation agencies and federal partner agencies, as well as with transportation industry and professional organizations (such as ACEC, WASHTO/AASHTO, IBTTA, WTS, ITS and TRB).

This position reports to our National Highway, Bridge & Tolling Market Leader with the flexibility to support all areas within our broader Highway and Bridges, Maritime, and Tolling and Transportation Operations business lines, including Intelligent Transportation Systems, Road Usage Charging, Managed Lanes, Tolling / Congestion Pricing, Mobility Operations, Connected & Automated Vehicle and other technology applications. The individual will also work closely with local offices and collaborate with staff across the country - as well as support our international teams focused on the same subject matter areas. Additionally, 

The National Transportation Strategic Advisor will possess a balanced commercial, strategic, delivery and business development mindset and the ability to drive an integrated strategy that combines advisory, planning, design engineering, program management and construction management professional services.  The position will provide strategic advisory services to our clients across industries.  

The successful National Transportation Strategic Advisor will demonstrate capabilities in:

A key part of this role is for the National Transportation Strategic Advisor to collaborate with WSP’s regional and local leadership to implement client engagement and business development strategies that are focused on growing our presence and ability to deliver strategic and technical solutions for our transportation, tolling and ITS related clients. Our group works closely with local offices and collaborates with staff across the country - as well as supports our international teams focused on the same subject matter areas. The National Transportation Strategic Advisor will also engage with our technical experts to develop the full suite of relevant client services. Most services will be provided by technical resources that reside throughout WSP’s Transportation and Advisory businesses and are readily available in a collaborative matrix model.  

Your Impact

Business Development / Strategic Leadership

  • Represent WSP at regional and national meetings and on appropriate committees and working groups, providing sponsorship support and thought leadership
  • Positioning the company as an industry leader in transportation practice areas, such as tolling, funding and finance, institutional and organizational arrangements, effective and efficient program management and project delivery, pricing and managed lanes, and innovative technologies in transportation operations including ferries.
  • Visiting clients

Business Performance

  • Act as a key contributor and business advisor to the National Highway, Bridge and Tolling Team
  • Strategic planning assistance in business development and client engagement
  • Supporting high-profile transportation mega-programs with organizational development, team building, program delivery strategy, and emergent situations
  • Participating on projects when appropriate in an advisory or strategic capacity, and serving on occasion as principal-in-charge or project lead when client relationships and areas of interest align
  • Providing guidance, leadership and support to ad hoc teams within the company
  • Providing a client’s perspective and industry context and advice with respect to business plans and strategically significant pursuits

WSP strongly believes that we demonstrate value for our clients through active participation and leadership in project delivery.  Our seller-doer philosophy carries forward into your typical week, where you can anticipate roughly:

  • 40% of your time working on projects for our clients. Project work would include activities such as Principal in Charge for major projects, providing strategic advice to clients, contributing to project development and deliverables, and conducting workshops with clients to lead to decisions and actions.
  • 60% on active pursuits and business development to clients.  Activities would include strategizing new opportunities, identifying leads, and pre-positioning with potential clients

Required Qualifications

  • The position requires BA/BS degree in Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Business, or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record of successfully growing a program, team or initiative in transportation
  • 12+ years of transportation consulting/engineering experience
  • Evidence of leadership qualities and ability to network with clients and others in the field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present both technical and policy results and recommendations
  • Active engagement in relevant industry organizations
  • Organized, self-starter with a strong entrepreneurial spirit
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • 25 years of transportation consulting/engineering experience, including at least five years of successful experience in delivery of technical work
