This Opportunity

WSP is initiating a search for a Ports and Marine Engineer with the potential to work out of any of our Maritime offices, including Newark, NJ; New York, NY; Valhalla, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Miami, FL; Tampa, FL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Charleston, SC or New Orleans, LA.

This person will be involved in projects with our Ports and Maritime Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. Our Maritime group comprises of highly motivated analysts, planners, and maritime civil and structural engineers, working in several key locations across the US and internationally. Major clients are port authorities, U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, terminal operators, contractors, private entities, and municipalities. The projects are diverse in nature, interesting, and challenging.  

Provides technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sector.  Tasks may include assisting with the research, optimal integration, construction, and coastal engineering of state-of-the-art piers, wharves, port terminals, seawalls, retaining walls, marinas, shore-side, and other facilities.  Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding installation, construction, and operation specifications.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.    
  • Perform basic professional marine engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, and usage to conform with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Assist with the development of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for project life cycles, and the proper installation and functioning of equipment, structures, and systems according to specifications; implementing future-ready solutions with marine and coastal engineering design standards.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research and specifications with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and software.
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with design concepts, construction, mitigation and improvement activities and projects.
  • Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of site work and code compliance.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, architects, and building, infrastructure, transportation, and port authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior marine, port, and coastal design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with marine, port, and coastal engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues. 
  • Familiarity with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Highly familiar with relevant marine, port, and coastal construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering. 
  • Seismic Design/background preferred. 
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Prior design experience.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation
Expected Salary (all locations): $71,700-$122,980

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
