This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for our Tucson, AZ office.  The following locations will also be considered: Reno, NV.  Be involved in projects with our Mine Engineering and Stability, Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

Your Impact

  • Provide consultation on open pit and underground mining projects for domestic and international clients
  • Direct a wide variety of mining rock mechanics management projects, including field investigation, laboratory testing and interpretation; design and construction; geotechnical analysis; and dam safety inspections and reviews
  • Direct and review geotechnical analyses with a focus on rock mechanics; provide technical expertise in your specialization
  • Manage quality control and risks during geotechnical and design work, including critical review of results in coordination with Principals
  • Direct or manage large, complex, and/or multidisciplinary projects according to client-approved scopes of work, and deliver high quality reports and drawings on time and within budget in coordination with Principals
  • Provide advice to mining operations
  • Maintain existing client relationships and develop new business opportunities
  • Complete or review technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs in coordination with Principals
  • Coach and mentor junior and intermediate staff with respect to their career growth and professional development
  • Participate in hiring, performance reviews, and training decisions
  • Participate in development and implementation of WSP’s mining business plan
  • Work collaboratively with other senior members of the Global Mining team to implement the business growth strategy, develop, and maintain relationships with a broad client base
  • Participate in and promote a safety-first culture  
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or post-graduate degree in geotechnical, mining or geological engineering.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant, post-degree) experience working in a consulting engineering or mining industry environment 
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Expertise in rock mechanics and geological engineering, with a technical specialization
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal communication, and emotional intelligence; ability to establish good relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Experience as a consulting engineer or technical services role
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain solid client relationships
  • Knowledge of and ability to use numerical modeling software including Rocscience (Dips, SLIDE, RS2, Examine 3D), Map3D, and Itasca (FLAC2D/3D, UDEC) an asset
  • Strong, client-focused project direction and business development skills
  • Ability to manage risk and have excellent engineering judgement
  • Ability to effectively delegate work and lead diverse, interdisciplinary project teams
  • Business acumen and leadership
  • Multilingual (verbal and written) candidate would be an asset 
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in geotechnical, mining or geological engineering.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
