This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Lab Planner/Architect to work in our office in Atlanta, Georgia, or Raleigh, NC. As a Senior Lab Planner/Architect, you will work independently supporting internal and external clients, vendors, project stakeholders, and partners throughout various stages of project delivery within the Lab Planning Group. This opportunity requires a combination of skills that are essential to the success in achieving the goals expected not only of the position, but of the mission of WSP as well.  This candidate will work supporting Project Directors and leading the project team to develop high quality designs on time and on budget. Provides a high level of subject matter expertise and guidance for programming, planning, concept development, restoration, alteration, extension, and implementation of functional, and sustainable lab designs for both the public and private sector. Tasks include conceptually visualizing projects, preparing drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents. The candidate is also expected to engage in developing and presenting design proposals, interface with clients, substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installations, and project feasibility.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural integrity, and occupancy.

Your Impact

  • Lead architectural and laboratory facility programming and planning design concepts.
  • Plans and conducts activities related to the development of new laboratories and research facilities including researching current and emerging technologies, evaluating cost, quality, and capability alternatives, and problem solving.
  • Perform professional architectural work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules, industry standards, and guidelines.
  • Provide oversight and assist in the development of programming and design documents, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates; updating design documents that require coordination with owners, other design disciplines, sub-consultants, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage in daily project and client management of laboratory projects from initial planning through construction.
  • Present planning schemes and design concepts clearly and concisely to clients and relevant project stakeholders.
  • Develop a client base for providing high level planning, architecture, and engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
  • Meet with various public or private entities, or individuals to discuss issues relating to a variety of planning, design, and construction challenges and programs.
  • Function as a designer to the extent necessary to complete projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Remain current with the latest architecture techniques and practices.
  • Mentor junior level staff to support their growth and professional development.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.
  • 12+ years of relevant post education experience in the learned discipline.
  • Essential professional licensure/certification credentials and professional affiliations (e.g.) AIA, NCARB, LEED AP.
  • Highly proficient with architectural principles, practices, process, and the application to project work-related issues.
  • Knowledge and experience with building and laboratory planning, drawing standards, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of restorative and new design projects.
  • Demonstrate problem solving ability, creative thinking, visualization, and technical drawing skills.
  • Working knowledge of principles and concepts for sustainability and green building design. Demonstrate knowledge behind reducing and eliminating the use of hazardous substances and greenhouse gases.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant building and construction laws, building codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of architectural principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons and illustrations to the appropriate regulations.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations during various phases of the construction and design of buildings, facilities, or structures, associated with applicable regulations, policies, and requirements.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing junior level, planners, architects, designers, and others to complete tasks effectively, efficiently, and completely.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Architecture or related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience in the planning and design of wet and dry laboratories, laboratory equipment, biocontainment or cleanroom design is required. #LI-JA1
