WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Traction Power Engineer for our Minneapolis, MN office.

Your Impact

  • Ensure that company technical policies and procedures are practiced during the execution of projects;
  • Develop design approaches and concepts for projects including Power Supply and Distribution Design for Light Rail, Heavy Rail, Commuter Rail, and High Speed Rail, utilizing overhead contact or third rail systems;
  • Model load flow with simulation software;
  • Prepare power system studies for AC and DC electrified railway systems;
  • Develop and review designs and technical specifications, meeting quality standards;
  • Develop construction cost estimates;
  • Develop design/engineering cost estimates;
  • Assist project managers in the coordination of project designs with other disciplines including attendance at project meetings;
  • Review shop drawings, record changes, and communicate directly with suppliers, contractors, and client representatives as required;
  • Support the installation and testing of traction power systems components and software;
  • Perform site investigations in substations and other wayside infrastructure;
  • Train and develop support staff:
  • Participate in WSP’s quality process for all deliverables:
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the design of AC and DC traction power systems for mass transit, light rail and commuter/intercity rail systems;
  • Support and participate in the Systems implementation phase of projects, such as installation, Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, Record Drawings and final reports.
  • Support procurement efforts by authoring technical requirements and specifications, performing vendor bid evaluations and supporting vendor selection.
  • Commissioning of Traction Power Supply and Distribution Systems and Equipment, including experience with engineering design on at least three transit or commuter/intercity rail projects;
  • Experience with commonly used software for AC and DC Power System analysis;
  • Good written and verbal communications skills and understanding of the English language;
  • Experience in a MicroStation and AutoCAD design environment for the development of circuit and cable drawings;
  • Ability to develop systemwide ductbank drawings by working in close coordination with respective system disciplines. Assist and provide working information to CAD for BIM clash detection.
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of applications;
  • Immediate availability to work in the US.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license;
  • Experience with load flow simulation software packages such as OpenPower;
  • Experience with Minnesota Metro Transit and Chicago Transit Authority is a plus.
  • Ability to perform site investigations and walk-downs in medium voltage (MV) substations and along electrified railroad
  • Experience in MV substation test requirements and acceptance criteria per IEEE and National Electrical Testing Agency (NETA) standards
