This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Sr. Bridge Inspection Engineer for our Washington, DC office.  The following locations will also be considered: Herndon and Baltimore.  Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 

The Team Leader shall use his/her education, licensure, and relevant work experience to perform independent and complete evaluation of the condition, function and load carrying capacity of bridges and their individual components.  These evaluations may form the basis of recommendations to bridge owners for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement.
Assist the region's bridge inspection director in pursuing work with DOTs and local jurisdictions. 

Your Impact

Bridge Inspection

  • Assist with business development and winning bridge inspection and repair work in DC, MD and VA. Plan, schedule and perform bridge inspections in accordance with the requirements of specific Bridge Owners, but in all cases, in compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges.
  • Liaison with client field/facility staff, lead/assist with communicating critical condition findings.
  • Direct other field team members.
  • Enforce safe operations in field.
  • Create or assist with creating and/or reviewing all required inspection reports.
  • Ensure technical compliance with all applicable standards and specifications.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to
  • WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Support the SE Bridge Inspection group in performing bridge, ancillary, culvert inspection in different jurisdictions as required.
  • Support in the preparation of proposals, tasks, reports, and other documents.

Bridge Engineering

  • Use current design criteria to develop bridge repairs and designs under the direction of a Senior Design Engineer.
  • Develop design calculations, for diagrams, structural analysis.
  • Use design and structural analysis software to develop structural analyses, including load ratings.
  • Develop structural and repair details is CADD Software.
  • Field Engineering and Services During Construction
  • Support different types of engineering activities in the field, including services during construction.
  • Assist different infrastructure teams, including the maritime and port group in the management of construction documentation, including request for information (RFIs), clarifications, documentation logs, etc.
  • Provide field observations of daily construction and inspection activities as requested. 

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • 15+ years of experience in bridge inspection (CEI or NBIS).
  • Team Leader (qualified) in southeastern states.
  • NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course
  • NBIS Bridge Scour and Analysis Training and experience
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Physically capable of performing continuous field work including working at heights and in close quarters, climbing, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to think critically and solve problems.
  • Ability to work well in team-oriented structure.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50%.
  • Ability to supervise, train and direct the work of team members.
  • Cognizant of time and budget management.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional FHWA/NHI Training - (130078) Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges and (130087) Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures.
  • Experience with Inspecting Complex Bridges
  • Familiarity with or certifications in various NDT techniques
  • AutoCAD/MicroStation Capabilities.
  • Able to obtain technical certifications as required.  ASNT Level II - Ultrasonic Testing Certification
