This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Sr. Consultant, Environmental Engineer for our Jacksonville, FL – Baymeadows Road office.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The Engineer will provide technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, and environmental permitting projects. Tasks may include assisting with the delineation and monitoring of known areas of soil and/or groundwater contamination, performing calculations to contaminated waste disposal, pollution control, and preserving the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of air, water, and land resources. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding field conditions and assessing and advising on the short- and long-term risks to ecological and human health.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Identify, collect, and compile environmental data from samples of soil, soil gas, groundwater, air, and other environmental medium for projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • Perform environmental engineering work and assist with conducting investigations, inspections, and environmental studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular environmental problem or issue; verify site characteristics; uncover primary, secondary, and tertiary environmental impacts; and/or to plan for future environmental remediation or other needs.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance pertaining to data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Conduct environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, methodologies, findings, and recommendations to prevent, control, clean-up or restore mid- to larger-scale environmental problems.
  • Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work, permitting strategies, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance, including tracking project budgets, labor hours and expenses, and subcontractor costs.
  • Provide high-level oversite for desk-based research, fieldwork, and/or laboratory work, including review of measurements, data interpretation, and computer modeling.
  • Provide environmental risk identification and impact assessment, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level threat mitigation and permitting activities projects to minimize impacts to the environment and humans.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Coordinate with clients, resource/regulatory agencies, and technical staff in a confident and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
  • Remain current in latest environmental science subject matter and techniques.
  • Actively engage in business development and proposal writing including the scoping and costing of medium- to large-sized projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related engineering discipline.
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in environmental engineering.
  • Knowledge of environmental engineering principles, practices, and methods and their application to environmental and project work-related issues.
  • Knowledge with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or product., and mitigation programs.
  • Knowledge of the techniques used in identifying, measuring, sampling, and studying environmental control.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal permitting agencies and environmental protection regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to technical reports, environmental permit applications, including field surveys and reporting, and resource and impact evaluations.
  • Project management experience with tracking hours and expenses for project work and adhering to project schedules.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, math principals, predictive models, and tools.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results and data collection, and identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project- or business-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain one within first year of employment
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER)
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training
