This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Structural Engineer for our Newark, NJ office. Become a part of our Transportation Structural Team and contribute to a dynamic organization dedicated to fulfilling client objectives and overcoming their challenges.  The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience in structural engineering, with a focus on highway bridges, rail/transit structures, walls, and other transportation-related facilities within the New Jersey.

In this role, you'll offer crucial support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers involved in due diligence, remediation, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects across both public and private sectors.  Your responsibilities span tasks from research and design to feasibility assessment, concept development and preliminary and final design of load-bearing structures like buildings, bridges, roadways, and mechanical structures, as well as construction engineering support services.

Collaborating closely with a team of engineers, you will play a pivotal role in various aspects of structural design and analysis.  Your contribution will be instrumental in ensuring that all tasks and projects adhere to industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.  Moreover, you'll generate accurate and concise reports and documentation related to assigned installations and construction specifications.

Your Impact

  • Perform both basic and complex structural design, analysis, and assessment of transportation facilities, including bridges, rail/transit structural systems, , and other related infrastructure structures.
  • Prepare and review design drawings, specifications, and construction documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards and project requirements.
  • Write technical reports detailing research findings, conclusions, and recommendations using relevant tools and software.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring the attainment of project objectives while offering technical assistance on design concepts and construction activities.
  • Assist in identification and assessment of risks, providing insights into design, construction, and improvement activities.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, professionals, and authorities on improvement and development projects at various phases/levels.
  • Adhere to ethical standards concerning company conduct, resources, and policies, including WSP’s Code of Conduct.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.  An advanced degree is desirable.
  • 2+ years of relevant post education experience in a related engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, processes, and the application to project work-related issues. Design/build experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as functioning as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, LARSA, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to be flexible with your work schedule conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional regional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer-in-Training Certification.
  • Prior relevant design experience.
  • A member of and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.
  • Experience using Revit, AutoCAD and/or, Microstation, MS Excel, Mathcad, SAP2000 software and 3-D finite element analysis programs.
