WSP is currently initiating a search for a Substation Electrical Engineer- Protection & Control for our Boston, MA office.  The following locations will also be considered: Augusta ME, Newark NJ,   Rochester NY, Philadelphia PA, Baltimore MD, Charlotte NC, Miami FL. Your Impact

  • This opportunity will provide delivery of high voltage electrical substation designs for our projects.
  • The P&C Substation Engineer will work under the leadership of Supervising Engineer. The Candidate is required to work within a multi-discipline team to efficiently design protection and control of high voltage substations. The engineer will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The engineer will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals.
  • This position is accountable to provide the design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all WSP’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control. Specific duties include:
    • Design of electrical substation facilities, specifically protection and control systems.
    • Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications, and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
    • Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
    • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
    • Resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
    • Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
    • Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
    • Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support projects.
    • Maintaining good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule, and cost of projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution. Must provide the curriculum of Electric Power courses taken during the studies. 
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in an electrical power engineering capacity.
  • Engineer in Training Certification or eligible for PE licensing 
  • Knowledge of modern electric power systems, power system protection and transmission & distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE. Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and maintain project ownership.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic
  • Interpretation of relay documents and Protection & Control design drawings.
  • Basic understanding of SCADA design.
  • Basic understanding of IEC61850 and DNP3 protocols.
  • Candidate should be able to run short circuit studies in ASPEN one liner.
  • The position is located at client offices with travel to the site on occasion.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering. 
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

Expected Salary: $68,800- $82,000
